4.7.2 Hardness tests. Flatware items shall be prepared and tested for hardness in accordance with ASTM E 18. Hardness tests shall be made in the locations specified in 4.7.2.1 through 4.7.2.3 for the item specified. Any average hardness reading not falling within the specified hardness limits will be cause for rejection of the lot being tested.
4.7.2.1 Type 1, Item I, style 2 knife. If necessary for the performance of this test, the knife blade may be ground parallel where the hardness test is to be performed. When grinding is accomplished, care shall be taken not to overheat the metal. Three readings shall be taken on the blade of the knives, located at points 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) from the end, midway, and 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) from NN as shown on figure 1 to determine conformance to 3.2.1.
4.7.2.2 Types 1 and 2, Item II, forks. One reading on each style fork midway between AA and BB; one reading between BB and CC; and one reading within 3/8 inch (0.95 cm) of CC on the handle as shown on figure 2 shall be taken to determine conformance to 3.2.2 for type 1, item II forks. Type 2 fork readings shall be taken in the locations similar to figure 2 determine conformance to 3.3.
4.7.2.3 Types 1 and 2, Item III, spoon. One reading on each style spoon at DB; one reading midway between CC and AA; and one reading midway between AA and BB as shown on figure 3 through 7 shall be taken to determine conformance to 3.2.3 and 3.3.3, as applicable.
4.8 Examination for preparation for delivery. A random sample of shipping containers shall be selected from each lot for examination of the unit, intermediate and shipping containers (as applicable) for conformance with the packaging, packing, and marking required in the contract or order. Samples shall be selected in accordance with inspection level S-2, AQL 6.5, expressed in terms of defects per hundred units. The sample unit shall be one shipping container.
5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVIERY
5.1 Packaging, packing, and marking. The packaging, packing, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
