COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPOON, FOOD SERVICE (Basting, Straining, and Mixing)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description (cid) covers stainless steel food service spoons.
2. CLASSIFICATION
2.1 Classfication. The spoon shall be of the following types and sizes, as specified (see 7.2).
Type I- Basting |
Size 1- 13 inch (33.0 cm) |
Type II- Straining |
Size 2- 15 inch (38.1 cm) |
Type III- Mixing |

3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Material. The spoons shall be formed from a single piece of corrosion-resisting steel conforming to a type 300 series in accordance with ASTM A 167.
3.2 Construction. The type I, II, and III spoons shall be in general conformance with figures 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The minimum thickness of the spoons shall be 0.056 inch (1.4 mm). The spoons shall have a stiffening rib which runs the length of the handle leading into the bowl. The size 1 and 2 spoons shall have an overall length of 13 inches (33.0 cm) and 14 inches (38.1 cm), respectively (+ 1/2 inch). The spoons shall have a pole in the end of the handle for hanging.
3.2.1 Bowl. The bowl of the spoon shall have a minimum length, width, and depth of 3-1/2 inches (8.9 cm), 2-1/2inches 6.4cm), and 9/16 inch (1.4cm), respectively. The type I basting spoon shall have a solid bowl. The type II straining spoon shall have 17 to 24 holes in the bowl. The type III mixing spoon shall have 6 to 10 slots.
3.3 Finish. The spoons shall be cleaned and polished to a No. 2B or better finish as defined by the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Handbook “Finishes for Stainless Steel”.
3.4 Marking. The spoons shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name, trade name, or trade name, or trademark of such known character that the source may be readily determined.
